Tablets Break and Aaron Evades Responsibility
God's writing in his hands, singing in the camp
Moses turns down with the two tables, written on both sides, the work and writing of God. Joshua hears shouting and thinks it is war. Moses hears singing. When he sees the calf and the dancing, his anger waxes hot; he casts the tables out of his hands and breaks them beneath the mount.
The calf is destroyed; Aaron's story is not
He burns the calf, grinds it to powder, strews it on water, and makes Israel drink. He asks Aaron what this people did to him that he brought so great a sin on them. Aaron says the people are set on mischief, repeats their demand, and then: they gave me gold, I cast it into the fire, 'and there came out this calf.'
Broken tablets are covenant rupture made visible. Drinking the powder is humiliation of the image, not a magic antidote. Aaron minimizes his graving tool into a fire that spontaneously produced a calf. The unit lets that evasion stand on the page so readers can hear it.
How this should shape us
Destroy the substitute, and still ask who made it. Do not accept a story that erases the tool, the hands, or the altar. Anger at a broken covenant is not a license to rewrite what leaders actually did.
