Exodus 32:30–35
Moses Offers Himself and the People Are Plagued
On the morrow Moses still hopes to make atonement
He tells the people they have sinned a great sin; he will go up; peradventure he can make atonement. He confesses the gods of gold. 'Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin—'; the sentence breaks. 'And if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.'
No transferred blotting, an angel, and a plague
The LORD answers that whoever has sinned against him, him will he blot out. Moses is to lead the people to the place spoken of; the Angel will go before them; in the day of visiting, God will visit their sin. The LORD plagued the people because they made the calf, which Aaron made.
Moses offers himself; God refuses to trade the innocent mediator for the guilty. Leadership continues; presence is not yet settled; plague follows. Aaron's making remains in the last clause. Forgiveness is asked; it is not a completed transaction in this unit.
How this should shape us
Do not offer to absorb another person's guilt as a heroic bargain, and do not pretend a plague has closed the file. Keep leading, keep naming who made the image, and leave room for a later word about presence.
