Exodus 35:20–29

Women and Men Bring until There Is Enough

The congregation leaves, then returns with stirred hearts

They come, everyone whose heart stirred him up and whose spirit made him willing, and bring the LORD's offering for the tent, its service, and the holy garments. Men and women bring bracelets, earrings, rings, tablets—all jewels of gold, every one who offered an offering of gold.

Women spin, and rulers bring stones

Everyone who had blue, purple, scarlet, linen, goats' hair, red rams' skins, or badgers' skins brings them. All who could offer silver and brass, and every one who had acacia, bring it. All the wise-hearted women spin with their hands and bring spun blue, purple, scarlet, and linen. Women whose heart stirred them in wisdom spin goats' hair. Rulers bring onyx and setting stones, spice, and oil.

Every man and woman whose heart made them willing brings a willing offering for all the work commanded by the hand of Moses. Named women's craft is part of the offering, not a footnote to male jewelry. The calf also used earrings; this scene redirects gold and skill toward the commanded dwelling.

How this should shape us

Make giving voluntary, credit skilled labor by name and role—including women's spinning—and do not hide those hands behind a leader's. Stop short of pressure, debt, or shame; the text's word is willing.

Where careful interpreters disagreeThe strongest options and their difficulties

Where do careful interpreters disagree?

Best judgment: Careful interpreters agree that the received text states the following: The congregation departs and returns with stirred hearts, jewelry, textiles, skins, metals, wood, spices, stones, and women's skilled spinning as freewill contributions. They disagree over source layers, date, historical recovery, archaeology, Hebrew details, ritual development, legal use, and canonical relationship in different proportions; this study treats the final form directly while marking those alternatives as probable or uncertain rather than settled fact.
