Exodus 36:1–7

Skilled Workers Begin and Gifts Are Stopped

Wise-hearted workers receive what Israel brought

Bezalel, Oholiab, and every wise-hearted man in whom the LORD put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the sanctuary, do according to all the LORD commanded. Moses calls them, and everyone whose heart stirred him up to come to the work. They receive of Moses all the offering Israel brought.

The people bring too much, and Moses stops them

Free offerings are still brought every morning. The wise men come and tell Moses: the people bring much more than enough. Moses commands a proclamation: let neither man nor woman make any more work for the offering of the sanctuary. The people are restrained from bringing. The stuff is sufficient for all the work, and too much.

Accountable leadership can say enough. Abundance is not a reason to keep collecting, stockpile for prestige, or treat generosity as a tap leaders may leave open.

How this should shape us

Set a public need and a stopping rule before fundraising begins. Report when the target is met, restrain further bringing, and do not invent new sacred extras just because the gold is still coming.

Teach it back

Explain Exodus 36:1–7 in your own words. Include both movements, its place in Exodus, one historical or compositional uncertainty, one affected person or group, and one conclusion the complete context rules out.

Where careful interpreters disagreeThe strongest options and their difficulties

Where do careful interpreters disagree?

Best judgment: Careful interpreters agree that the received text states the following: Bezalel, Oholiab, and every wise-hearted worker receive the offerings; daily abundance exceeds need, so Moses commands the people to stop giving. They disagree over source layers, date, historical recovery, archaeology, Hebrew details, ritual development, legal use, and canonical relationship in different proportions; this study treats the final form directly while marking those alternatives as probable or uncertain rather than settled fact.
