Exodus 38:1–8

Bezalel Makes Bronze Altar and Basin

The burnt-offering altar is completed in brass

He makes the square horned altar, its vessels, grate, rings, and staves, hollow with boards, as the court altar of chapter 27 required.

The laver is made from assembling women's mirrors

He makes the brass laver and its foot of the looking-glasses of the women who assembled at the door of the tent of meeting.

Approach-water is funded by women's mirrors, named as a group at the door. The basin that guards priestly washing is not anonymous metal. Their gathering and their gift are part of the holy place's making.

How this should shape us

Record whose ordinary objects became the basin. Do not melt women's things into a male monument without saying so, and do not forget that this brass stands where priests must wash or die.

Teach it back

Explain Exodus 38:1–8 in your own words. Include both movements, its place in Exodus, one historical or compositional uncertainty, one affected person or group, and one conclusion the complete context rules out.

Where careful interpreters disagreeThe strongest options and their difficulties

Where do careful interpreters disagree?

Best judgment: Careful interpreters agree that the received text states the following: The burnt-offering altar, utensils, grate, rings, and poles are completed, and women's mirrors become the bronze basin at the tent entrance. They disagree over source layers, date, historical recovery, archaeology, Hebrew details, ritual development, legal use, and canonical relationship in different proportions; this study treats the final form directly while marking those alternatives as probable or uncertain rather than settled fact.
