Exodus 9:8–12
Boils Defeat the Magicians
Furnace soot becomes boils
Moses and Aaron take handfuls of furnace ashes. Moses sprinkles them toward heaven in Pharaoh's sight. They become dust and a boil breaking out with blains on man and beast throughout Egypt.
The magicians cannot even stand
The magicians cannot stand before Moses because of the boils; the boils are on them and on all the Egyptians. Now the LORD hardens Pharaoh's heart, and he does not listen, as spoken to Moses.
The contest with court experts ends not with a better trick but with bodies that cannot take their place in the room. Hardening language here is explicit as the LORD's action. That does not erase Pharaoh's prior refusals, and it does not make the sores a verdict to copy onto later sick people.
How this should shape us
Refuse to read skin disease as proof of a person's guilt, and refuse to enjoy an opponent's bodily collapse. Oppose the throne's stubbornness without turning inflamed bodies into a moral diagram.
