Mount Seir Faces Judgment for Perpetual Hostility
Mount Seir's perpetual hatred
The word against mount Seir: the LORD is against it. He will stretch out his hand, make it most desolate, and cut off from it him that passeth out and him that returneth. He will fill the mountains with the slain; in the hills, valleys, and all the rivers, they that are slain with the sword shall fall.
Because Seir has had a perpetual hatred, and has shed the blood of the children of Israel by the force of the sword in the time of their calamity, in the time that their iniquity had an end. Blood-guilt is timed to Israel's disaster. Hatred waited for the calamity.
I will make thee perpetual desolations
As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will prepare thee unto blood, and blood shall pursue thee: sith thou hast not hated blood, even blood shall pursue thee. Cities become waste; Seir itself is perpetual desolation; none shall remain, and they shall know that he is the LORD.
Seir and Edom are not a modern ethnic group. The oracle does not authorize retaliatory land destruction. It names old hostility that used Judah's fall as an opening for the sword.
How this should shape us
Do not keep a hereditary hatred warm until the other side is weak. Refuse to baptize that wait as justice, and refuse to aim Seir at a living people or a present hillside.
