Ezra 2:64–70

Totals, gifts, and settlement close the register

A whole assembly, plus servants, singers, and animals

The total congregation is given as forty-two thousand three hundred sixty, besides servants and two hundred singing men and women, with horses, mules, camels, and donkeys. The close of the register insists that return is a mixed camp: free householders, dependent labor, musicians, and livestock. It is a people on the move, not a pure civic roll of landowners only.

Gifts and towns close the chapter

Some heads of houses give to the work according to their ability; the rest of the people settle in their towns, with priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, and Nethinim doing the same. Settlement, not a finished temple, is the first landing. Imperial permission has produced a provincial population with a treasury beginning, not a completed restoration.

How this should shape us

Count the whole camp, including those your culture prefers not to number. Then put money toward the work and actually live somewhere. Renewal that never settles into ordinary towns remains a speech.
