Ezra 4:6–16
A later dossier accuses Jerusalem of rebellion
A later file is inserted, not a seamless next week
The narrative leaps to Ahasuerus and then to Artaxerxes with a letter in Aramaic from Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of the colonists of Erech, Babylon, and Susa whom Osnappar settled. This is a later dossier about the city and walls, dropped into the temple story to show a pattern of accusation. Chronology is being used as argument, not as a simple diary.
Jerusalem accused as a chronic rebel
The letter calls the city rebellious and harmful to kings, claims that finishing walls will mean no more tribute, custom, or toll, and warns that the emperor will then have no portion in the province Beyond the River. The charge is fiscal and political: a rebuilt Jerusalem will defect. It is the language of imperial risk management, not a theological debate about the altar.

Learn to hear how paperwork can smear a people. Accusers often skip worship and go straight to taxes, loyalty, and panic about lost control. Do not let a later political file be read as if it were the same scene as a refused building offer.
