Quick Meaning
During Rachel's severe labor, the midwife tells her not to fear because she is giving birth to another son. The encouragement accompanies danger; it does not promise that Rachel will survive.

Read verses 16–18 and Genesis 30:22–24. The severe labor explains the midwife's words, verse 18 supplies Rachel's death, and Joseph's naming recalls Rachel's hope for another son. Without verse 18, 'fear not' can be misread as a guarantee of safety.
