Genesis 35:28 Explained in Context

Use this verse as a doorway into the larger passage—not as an isolated saying.

Selected verse

Verse 28. And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years.

King James Version — public domain in the United States · Bible text and permissions

Role in This Section

Isaac's life totals 180 years. This age notice prepares the death report in verse 29 and contributes to the book's chronology, but it does not by itself explain when the death occurred relative to Joseph's story.

Read It With

  • Genesis 35:23–29

Read verses 27–29, then compare Genesis 37:2; 41:46, 53–54; and 47:9. Verse 29 supplies the death and burial, while the later age notices show that the notice is placed for literary closure rather than simple event order.

Why It Needs Context

This isolated age total is incomplete without Isaac's death notice and Genesis's wider chronology. It does not create a promise of longevity for faithful readers.

Read Genesis 35:27–29 together

Why these verses belong together: Jacob's arrival to Isaac supplies the setting for Isaac's age, death, and burial by Esau and Jacob.

Verse 27. And Jacob came unto Isaac his father unto Mamre, unto the city of Arbah, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.

Verse 28. And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years.

Verse 29. And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
