Genesis 37:21 Explained in Context
Use this verse as a doorway into the larger passage—not as an isolated saying.
Verse 21. 21And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.
King James Version — public domain in the United States · Bible text and permissions
Quick Meaning
Reuben hears the plan and prevents the immediate killing, telling the brothers not to take Joseph's life. This is real restraint, but the rescue remains incomplete until verse 22 explains his hidden purpose.
Read It With
- Genesis 37:12–36
Read verses 20–22 and later verses 29–30. The murder proposal gives Reuben something specific to hear, verse 22 gives his pit plan and rescue intent, and his later shock shows that the plan fails.
Why This Verse Appears Here
Reuben's first objection interrupts the murder proposal and begins a limited rescue strategy that the next verse explains.
Read Genesis 37:18–22 together
Why these verses belong together: The conspiracy, dream mockery, murder and concealment plan, and Reuben's limited rescue strategy form one deliberation.
Verse 18. 18 And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.
Verse 19. 19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.
Verse 20. 20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.
Verse 21. 21 And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.
Verse 22. 22 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.
Follow the Context
- Jacob sends Joseph from Hebron to seek the welfare of his brothers and flocks; an unnamed man redirects him from Shechem to Dothan (37:12–17).
- The brothers conspire to kill Joseph and discredit his dreams, while Reuben proposes the pit with an unstated plan known to the narrator to return Joseph to Jacob (37:18–22).
- They strip Joseph, throw him into an empty cistern, sit to eat, and notice an Ishmaelite caravan traveling toward Egypt (37:23–25).
- Judah proposes sale rather than murder; Midianite traders, Ishmaelites, unnamed verb subjects, silver, and transport create a real dispute about the exact transaction sequence, while the brothers remain responsible in the narrative as a whole (37:26–28).
- Reuben discovers Joseph missing; the brothers use goat blood and the garment to make Jacob infer a wild-animal death (37:29–33).
- Jacob refuses consolation and expects to descend mourning to Sheol, while the closing notice places the living Joseph in Potiphar's service in Egypt (37:34–36).
Phrase-by-Phrase Explanation

How certain? very strong“delivered him out of their hands”
In plain language: Reuben stops them from killing Joseph at that moment.
The narrator describes a genuine rescue from immediate death, not a completed return home.
Why it matters: Limited rescue and complete safety must not be confused.
How certain? very strong“let us not kill him”
In plain language: Reuben rejects taking Joseph's life.
His first intervention changes the group's course.
Why it matters: Moral restraint is real even when it remains compromised.
How certain? very strongWhat This Verse Is Not Saying
Reuben's intervention does not make the group safe for Joseph.
The verse does not state Reuben's exact motive, including whether firstborn responsibility, compassion, self-interest, or several concerns drive him.
Preventing immediate murder does not make the later pit confinement harmless.
The passage does not explain why Reuben is absent when Joseph is removed or sold.
What Remains True
Stopping an immediate lethal act matters, but faithful protection also requires securing the vulnerable person rather than leaving the rescue to a secret later attempt.
How It Can Shape Life
- When possible, oppose lethal or severe harm clearly, move the person to safety, and obtain outside help instead of relying on a concealed plan alone.
