Jeremiah 24:8–10
The Bad Figs Signify Zedekiah and Those Who Remain
The bad figs are Zedekiah's remaining world, not an ethnic label
As the evil figs which cannot be eaten, so will I give Zedekiah, his princes, the residue of Jerusalem that remain in the land, and them that dwell in Egypt. They will be a reproach, proverb, taunt, and curse in all places I shall drive them.
Sword, famine, and pestilence will consume them from the land given to their fathers. The oracle explains this historical fork: remaining with Zedekiah's policy is not safety. It does not authorize contempt for survivors.
Reproach language must stop at this court's fate
Bad is a sign of inedible figs, not a word to pin on Jews, on people who could not leave, or on anyone living through the aftermath. Collective punishment as a reader's project is forbidden.
Egypt-dwellers in this unit are Judeans seeking refuge, not a modern nation to hate. Do not recycle naughty-figs talk as a slur.
How this should shape us
Refuse any use of this vision that calls a people rotten. Name a failed royal strategy without despising those trapped in it.
