Jeremiah 28:5–9
Jeremiah Says Amen and States a Prophetic Test
Jeremiah says Amen, and then states how peace-oracles are known
Jeremiah the prophet said Amen: the LORD do so; the LORD perform thy words which thou hast prophesied, to bring again the vessels and all that is carried away captive. He wants the restoration Hananiah named.
Yet he reminds priests and people of prophets before them who prophesied against many countries of war, evil, and pestilence. The prophet which prophesieth of peace, when the word of the prophet shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known, that the LORD hath truly sent him.
Fulfillment is a real test, not the only one, and not a toy for hindsight
Jeremiah grants the desire and still withholds authentication. Peace is the surprising word in a tradition of disaster-speech; therefore it waits for happening.
Fulfillment is not the only ethical or theological test. Delayed outcomes require humility rather than rewriting the timetable after the fact. A cruel word is not true merely because it is grim.
How this should shape us
Desire the good news, then refuse to stamp it sent until life bears it out. Do not manipulate dates backward, and do not treat harshness as a substitute for truth.
