Jeremiah 47:1–7
A Flood from the North Overwhelms Philistia
Waters from the north rise over Philistia's coast
The word concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh struck Gaza, pictures waters rising from the north, an overflowing torrent. Cities cry out. Fathers do not turn back for children because their hands are feeble. Tyre and Sidon are mentioned; Gaza and Ashkelon are shaved and silent. The poem ends by addressing the LORD's sword: how long until you are quiet? It cannot be still because the LORD has given it a charge against Ashkelon and the seacoast.
Ancient Philistines must not be equated with modern Palestinians. The oracle cannot authorize present violence in Gaza or anywhere else. Parental paralysis in a flood of invasion is grief, not a joke. The sword is a poetic addressee, not a weapon handed to the reader.
How this should shape us
Mourn a coastal people under a northern flood without recruiting the poem for today's wars. Do not say 'Philistine' as a slur, and do not aim this sword at anyone alive.
