Jeremiah 49:1–6
Ammon Is Judged for Occupying Gad
Ammon is asked about Gad's land, then promised a later turning too
Has Israel no sons? Why then has Milcom inherited Gad, and his people settled in its cities? The question is about an ancient territorial seizure after Israel's disaster, not a deed for later armies. Rabbah will become a desolate mound, her villages burned; Israel shall dispossess those who dispossessed him, says the poem. Daughters of Rabbah lament. The people trust in their treasures: who will come against me?
They will be driven out, every man right on, with no one to gather the fugitives. Afterward the LORD will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites. Ancient inheritance rhetoric does not authorize modern conquest, and it does not license hatred of present Jordanians or anyone living where Ammon once was. The restoration line already blocks a fantasy of permanent riddance.
How this should shape us
Do not turn a dispute over Gad into a land grab in your century. Hear both the charge and the promise to restore Ammon. Living neighbors are not Milcom's people for you to drive.
