Jeremiah 50:33–40
The Strong Redeemer Pleads the Captives' Cause
A redeemer takes up the captives' case while Babylon is unmade in images
Israel and Judah are oppressed together; all who took them captive hold them fast and refuse to let them go. Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name. He will surely plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth and unrest to the inhabitants of Babylon. A sword is called against Chaldeans, officials, wise men, diviners, warriors, horses, chariots, mixed peoples, treasuries, waters, and the drought of her sea.
She shall become a heap, a haunt of jackals, a horror, without inhabitant, like Sodom and Gomorrah when God overthrew them. Divine advocacy for captives is the moral center. It does not make retaliatory cruelty just, and it does not dehumanize modern Iraqis or anyone living where Babylon stood. Rest for the earth is not a warrant to empty a land of people you have decided are jackals.
How this should shape us
Take the strong Redeemer's side by pleading for people held fast, not by dreaming of a city without inhabitants. Do not pour Sodom language on Iraq or on any neighborhood. Rest that costs other civilians their lives is not the rest this plea is for.

Best judgment: Divine advocacy does not make retaliatory cruelty just or dehumanize modern Iraqis and other residents of ancient Babylonian lands.
