Jeremiah 51:45–53

God's People Are Told to Leave amid Rumors

Come out of her, and do not go to pieces when the rumors change

Go out of her midst, my people. Let every one save his life from the fierce anger of the LORD. Do not be fainthearted or afraid at the rumor heard in the land, when a rumor comes one year and another the next, violence in the land and ruler against ruler. The community inside Babylon is told not to freeze in the news cycle of an empire eating itself.

Remember the LORD from afar, and let Jerusalem come into your mind. We are put to shame, for foreigners have entered the holy places of the LORD's house. Therefore days are coming when God will punish her images, and through all her land the wounded shall groan. Though Babylon should mount up to heaven, destroyers will come from the LORD. This ancient departure call is not a universal command to abandon cities, families, jobs, or churches whenever a leader brands them Babylon.

How this should shape us

Keep Jerusalem in mind without treating every workplace as Babylon. Do not panic at each year's rumor, and do not walk out on ordinary life because the metaphor is available. Save your life when a real collapse comes; do not stage a collapse so you can feel biblical.
