Officials Are Executed and Deportation Totals Are Counted
Named officials are killed at Riblah, and a partial count of the deported is filed
The captain of the guard takes Seraiah the chief priest, Zephaniah the second priest, and three keepers of the threshold; an officer over the men of war; seven men of the king's council found in the city; the secretary of the commander who mustered the people; and sixty men of the people of the land. Nebuzaradan brings them to the king of Babylon at Riblah, and he strikes them down. They die.
Then the chapter counts: in the seventh year, 3,023 Judeans; in the eighteenth year, 832 persons from Jerusalem; in the twenty-third year, 745 persons; all the persons were 4,600. The numbers are selective, not a complete death or exile toll. Victims must not be reduced to statistics. These executions are not a pattern for killing Jewish leaders. 'Judah carried away' in the parallel tradition is grief for a land emptied, not a taunt, and not a full register of everyone who suffered.
How this should shape us
Say the names and admit the count is incomplete. Do not file the dead under 'judgment finished,' and do not let 4,600 become a way to make the catastrophe look small or tidy.
