Job 11:1–11:6
Zophar Accuses Job and Claims God Has Underpunished Him
Zophar answers volume with contempt
Then answered Zophar the Naamathite. Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified? Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed? For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes.
He wishes God would speak, and then claims Job has been underpunished
But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee; and that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.
The prologue has declared Job upright and the ruin without cause. The epilogue will reject the friends' speech. Zophar's assertion must never be used to speculate that a sufferer hides worse sins. Underpunishment is an invented ledger.
How this should shape us
Do not tell a person in ashes that they have gotten off lightly. Multitude of words is not proof of guilt, and a wish that God would shame them is not wisdom.
