Job Fears the Unchangeable Divine Purpose
The One Job seeks is also the One he cannot turn
Job says God is of one mind, and who can turn him? What God's soul desires, God does. God performs the thing appointed for Job, and many such things are with him.
The lines voice unequal power. Job does not here receive a map of each event's hidden purpose. He says that the purpose, whatever it is, will not be bargained down.
Fear does not finish his speech
Therefore he is troubled at God's presence. When he considers, he is afraid. God makes his heart soft, the Almighty troubles him. Yet he is not cut off by the darkness, nor does darkness cover his face so as to silence him.
Soft heart and troubled mind are not unbelief. They are what unchangeable power feels like from below. The unit does not teach fatalism, refusal of help, or a duty to call every blow a blessing.
How this should shape us
You may fear a purpose you cannot edit without pretending you understand it. Do not baptize passivity, and do not tell a frightened person that darkness is a verdict on their faith.
