Some Evildoers Choose Darkness

Some people do not stumble into night. They choose it

Job turns from open exploitation to those who rebel against the light. They do not know its ways or stay in its paths. The murderer rising with the light kills the poor and needy and is in the night as a thief. The adulterer's eye waits for twilight, saying, No eye shall see me, and disguises the face. The burglar digs through houses in the dark.

By day they shut themselves up. They do not know the light. Morning is to them as the shadow of death. If someone recognizes them, they are in the terrors of the shadow of death.

Predation is named without making night itself guilty

The poetry is moral, not a curfew. Murder, adultery, and theft use darkness as cover. The unit does not make every night worker, traveler, or insomniac suspect, and it does not hand neighbors a warrant to hunt one another after dusk.

Set beside 24:1-12, the point is double: some harm is public and unpunished; some harm hides and still happens. Neither kind proves that Job's sores are a verdict.
