Job Mocks Advice That Helped No One
Job measures the last speech by whether it helped anyone
Job asks how Bildad has helped the powerless, how he has saved the arm that has no strength, how he has counseled the one without wisdom, and how he has plentifully declared the thing as it is.
The questions are sarcastic because the help was zero. A hymn about high peace did not lift a weak arm. Job then asks whose help Bildad has uttered and whose breath came out from him. Source and usefulness are both on the table.
Humility is not the same as uselessness
Job does not deny that God is great. He denies that a true sentence about greatness is automatically good medicine. Counsel is tested at the body it claims to save.
The satire also has a limit. Honest uncertainty is not contemptible, and Job's mockery is not a permit to sneer at every quiet person who does not know what to say.
How this should shape us
Before you speak about God to a crushed person, ask whether the speech helps the powerless. Grandeur that leaves the weak unhelped is not wisdom yet.
