Job Expected Long Life and Served as a Trusted Leader

He expected to die in his nest

Job said he would die in his nest and multiply days as the sand. His root was spread by the waters. The dew lay all night on his branch. His glory was fresh in him. His bow was renewed in his hand.

The expectation was long life after a well-set household. That expectation is why the ash-heap is so disorienting. It is not a promise God failed in the sense of a signed contract. It is how an honored life had learned to imagine its end.

They waited for him as for rain

People listened and waited, kept silence at his counsel, spoke not again after his word. His speech dropped on them. They waited as for rain and opened their mouth as for the latter rain. If he laughed at them, they did not believe it. He chose their way, sat chief, dwelt as a king in the army, as one who comforts the mourners.

Leadership here is trust given by a community that needed comfort as much as decisions. Honorable service still does not purchase immunity from suffering, and a trusted counselor is not beyond later accountability.
