Job 36:1–36:4
Elihu Claims Perfect Knowledge on God's Behalf
He asks for a little more time and then claims completeness
Elihu continues and asks that they suffer him a little, and he will show them that he has yet to speak on God's behalf. He will fetch his knowledge from afar. He will ascribe righteousness to his Maker.
His words, he says, shall not be false. He that is perfect in knowledge is with Job. Whether the 'perfect' one is God or Elihu's own claim for himself, the rhetoric is maximum. He is no longer merely the young man who had to wait.
Boldness on God's behalf still needs a bridle
Speaking for God's righteousness is a grave task. Claiming that falsehood has left your mouth, or that perfect knowledge has sat down beside a sufferer, is how a distinct voice becomes dangerous.
No pastor, friend, or commentator should borrow this sentence as a warrant. Elihu must now be tested by the discipline theory he applies to Job and by the storm poetry that follows. The whirlwind will not begin, 'Elihu was perfect in knowledge.'
How this should shape us
Refuse the pose of perfect knowledge, especially when you say you are speaking for God. Patience from others is not proof that your next paragraph is true.
