Job 38:1–38:3
The LORD Answers Job from the Whirlwind
The LORD answers Job, not Elihu, and not with the heavenly minutes
Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind. The long divine silence breaks. The speaker is the LORD. The place of speech is a storm. The addressee is Job.
The heavenly council of chapters 1 and 2 is not disclosed. The adversary is not mentioned. The friends are not scored. Elihu is not thanked. No sentence says, Here is why the children died. The book refuses a tidy theodicy at the very moment a reader most wants one.
Job is summoned as a man who must gird himself
Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up now your loins like a man. I will demand of you, and you declare to me.
The challenge is interrogation, not a lecture that closes the ledger. Job had wanted a hearing. He gets questions. Whether the 'who' includes more than Job is debated; inside this unit the demand falls on the man who asked to speak with the Almighty. Knowledge is at issue, not a secret sin Eliphaz could name. The whirlwind does not baptize the friends.
How this should shape us
When God finally speaks here, do not supply the explanation the speech withholds. Let questions remain questions. Do not use the storm to blame the wounded, to crown Elihu, or to claim you now know the cause of a neighbor's loss.
