Eliphaz Warns that Resentment Destroys the Fool
Eliphaz dares Job to find a holy listener, then paints a fool's collapse
Call now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn? For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one. I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation.
The harm is pictured reaching the household
His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them. Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance.
The speech does not prove that Job is this fool, and it does not prove that the dead children fit the pattern. One observed downfall cannot be stretched across every loss. Naming children in a moral fable while Job's children lie dead is already a cruelty the later verdict will expose.
How this should shape us
Do not illustrate a proverb with a friend's dead household. Resentment can destroy a person; that truth still does not identify this sufferer as the fool.
