John 10:7-10, King James Version

John 10:7-10

Jesus Is the Gate Who Gives Abundant Life

Jesus is the door: saving access against those who steal and kill

Jesus says again, 'I am the door of the sheep.' All that ever came before him are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. That line is aimed at illegitimate claimants in the figure, not at Israel's prophets or at Judaism. He is the door: by him if anyone enter, that person shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

The thief comes only to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. Jesus is come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. Abundant life is life in relation to him. It is not a promise of wealth, health, comfort, consumption, or long years without suffering. The gate image also does not authorize churches to control people by locking them in or out for extraction.

Pasture means nourishment and freedom of movement

Going in and out is the opposite of a trap. Life is measured against the thief's harvest of people, not against a prosperity ledger.

How this should shape us

Evaluate spiritual access by whether it serves life, freedom, nourishment, and safety. Do not read 'all who came before' as a condemnation of Israel's prophets, and do not sell abundant life as guaranteed comfort.
