John 17:20-26, King James Version

John 17:20-26

Jesus Prays for Future Believers' Visible Unity

He prays for those who will believe, that a visible oneness might lead the world to faith.

The prayer widens to those who will believe through the disciples' word. He asks that they all may be one, as the Father is in him and he in the Father, so that the world may believe that the Father sent him. The glory given him he has given them, that they may be one as Father and Son are one, that the world may know the sending and the love. He wants them with him to see his glory, and he will continue to make the Father's name known so that the love with which the Father loved him may be in them, and he in them.

The pattern is Father-Son mutuality and mission. Believers share that love and unity; they do not become divine in the same sense. Unity does not require institutional uniformity, silence about abuse, or unsafe reconciliation. The prayer is not a warrant for coercive ecumenism or control of conscience. Visible oneness is for the world's belief, which means it cannot be a performance that hides harm.

How this should shape us

Pursue truthful, loving, mission-serving unity that people can actually see. Keep justice, accountability, and legitimate difference in the room. Do not call a merger 'John 17' if it silences survivors, and do not treat disagreement about secondary matters as proof that the prayer failed.
