Signs Produce Belief that Jesus Does Not Entrust Himself To
Many believe because of signs, and Jesus does not entrust himself to that belief
At the Passover feast many believe in his name when they see the miracles he does. Jesus does not commit himself to them. He knows all people and does not need anyone to testify what is in a human being, because he knows it.
The wordplay is sharp: they believe, and he will not believe in them. Sign-based response can be real and still unready. The narrator is not declaring every believer false, and the scene does not hand human leaders a license to claim they can read motives as Jesus does.

The caution is about attaching himself to enthusiasm that has not yet faced his fuller claim. Excitement around wonders is not the same as abiding trust.
How this should shape us
Do not treat a burst of religious excitement as mature faith, and do not appoint yourself the judge of other people's hidden motives. Test response by truth, love, and the cross rather than by how impressive the signs felt.
