John 20:30-31
Selected Signs Are Written for Belief and Life
The book is a selection aimed at life, not a complete modern biography.
Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. These are written so that the readers may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing they may have life in his name.
Manuscripts differ between forms often related to coming to believe and continuing to believe; the aspect does not map mechanically onto an evangelistic versus a confirmatory audience, and the variant does not prove only one. The statement functions like a conclusion before chapter 21, which has suggested epilogue or edition theories without proving a full redaction history. Written testimony is selective on purpose. John 20:31 does not authorize coercive belief or contempt for readers who remain unconvinced.
How this should shape us
Read the selected signs toward life-giving trust in Jesus as Messiah and Son of God. Let that purpose govern interpretation: the book is after life in his name, not after exhaustive coverage, forced certainty, or winning an argument by volume. You may keep reading chapter 21 without pretending this purpose sentence never closed a circle.
Teach it back

Where do responsible interpreters differ?
Best judgment: Manuscripts differ between present and aorist forms commonly related to 'continue believing' and 'come to believe,' though the aspect does not map mechanically onto that distinction. The statement looks like a conclusion before chapter 21, supporting epilogue or edition theories without proving a complete redaction history. Written testimony is selective, not exhaustive biography.
