John 3:22-30
John Rejoices as Jesus' Work Increases
Two baptizing circles raise a rivalry that John refuses
Jesus and his disciples are in the Judean countryside baptizing; John is baptizing at Aenon because there is much water. A question about purifying leads John's disciples to report that the one who was with John beyond Jordan is baptizing and all are coming to him. John 4:2 will note that Jesus himself was not doing the baptizing. The report is about a growing movement, not a scoreboard of divine favor.
John answers that a person can receive only what is given from heaven. He is not the Christ but is sent before him. The friend of the bridegroom rejoices at the bridegroom's voice. That joy is fulfilled: Jesus must increase, and John must decrease. The purification dispute is a Jewish question. It does not portray Jewish practice as petty.
Decrease is vocation, not erasure
John's joy is complete when the one he announced is received. 'He must increase' does not require unhealthy self-erasure, and it does not give abusive leaders a verse for silencing people. John keeps a bounded calling and refuses envy.
How this should shape us
Receive a limited calling with joy when another person's faithful work grows. Refuse ministry rivalry without surrendering your name, your safety, or truthful accountability to anyone who demands that you disappear.
