God's Work Is Trust in the Bread from Heaven

God's work is to believe the one he sent, the bread of life

They ask what they shall do that they might work the works of God. Jesus answers that this is the work of God: that they believe on him whom he hath sent. They ask for a sign, recalling that their fathers ate manna in the desert, as it is written, he gave them bread from heaven to eat. Jesus says Moses did not give that bread; the Father gives the true bread from heaven, which comes down and gives life unto the world. They say, 'Lord, evermore give us this bread.'

Jesus says, 'I am the bread of life.' Whoever comes to him shall never hunger; whoever believes shall never thirst. They have seen and do not believe. All that the Father gives him shall come, and whoever comes he will in no wise cast out. He came down from heaven not to do his own will but the will of the one who sent him: that of all given him he should lose nothing, but raise it up again at the last day. This is the will of the one who sent him: that everyone who sees the Son and believes on him may have everlasting life, and he will raise that person up at the last day.

Coming is welcome, not an achievement that earns life

Believing is reliance on the sent one, not meritorious mental work. Divine giving, human coming, present life, preservation, and last-day resurrection sit together. One verse about giving or coming must not erase the rest. Coming to Jesus also does not cancel physical hunger, grief, or death now.
