Joshua 10:12-15
Sun and Moon Stand in the Victory Poem
Joshua speaks to sun and moon in Israel's sight
On the day the LORD delivers up the Amorites, Joshua speaks to the LORD and says in Israel's sight, 'Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.' The sun stands still and the moon stays until the people have avenged themselves on their enemies.
The Book of Jasher is cited; the day is called unlike any other
The narrator asks, is this not written in the book of Jasher? The sun stays in the midst of heaven and does not haste to go down about a whole day. There was no day like it before or after, that the LORD hearkened to the voice of a man, for the LORD fought for Israel. Joshua and all Israel return to the camp at Gilgal.
The unit is poem plus interpretation, tied to a lost book. It marvels that God listened to a human voice in battle. It does not authorize eclipse dating, pseudoscientific certainty, invented worldwide legends, a reconstructed miracle mechanic, or modern violence framed as a cosmic mandate. Vengeance completed under stopped lights remains vengeance.
How this should shape us
Let a wonder stay a wonder without forcing a laboratory or a calendar onto it. Do not use sun and moon as a banner for revenge, and do not pretend a lost poem has given you the physics of a holy war.
Teach it back
Explain Joshua 10:12-15 in your own words. Include its movement, relation to Deuteronomy and the rest of Joshua, one material uncertainty or ethical cost, and one modern use the context rules out.
