Joy Is Redirected from Power to Gracious Revelation
Joy is moved from power over spirits to names kept by God
The seventy return with joy: even the demons submit in Jesus' name. He says he saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven, and he has given them authority to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; nothing shall hurt them. Then he redirects: do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but that your names are written in heaven.
In that hour he rejoices in the Holy Spirit and thanks the Father, Lord of heaven and earth, who has hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes. All things have been delivered to him by the Father; no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. He privately blesses the disciples' sight. Serpent-and-scorpion language belongs to this mission report; it does not command handling danger. "Babes" critiques self-sufficiency; it does not celebrate ignorance.

Let your deepest gladness be that God knows your name, not that you can make unseen powers flinch. Do not pick up snakes, skip medicine, or treat naivete as holiness. Receive what is revealed without sneering at learning, and without needing a spiritual thrill to prove you belong.
