Luke 12:22–12:34
Seek the Kingdom and Reorder Possessions
Anxiety about food and clothes is answered by a Father and a different purse
He says to his disciples, therefore do not be anxious about life, what you will eat, or about the body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, the body more than clothing. Ravens neither sow nor reap, and God feeds them; they are of more value than birds. Worry cannot add a cubit to one's span. Lilies neither toil nor spin, yet Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of them. If God so clothes the grass, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith.
Do not seek what you will eat and drink, and do not be of anxious mind. The nations of the world seek those things, and the Father knows you need them. Seek his kingdom, and these things will be added. Fear not, little flock; it is the Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell possessions and give alms; make purses that do not grow old, treasure in the heavens that does not fail. Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. The rhetoric addresses anxious striving inside a community commanded to give. It is not proof that food, work, budgets, medicine, or public provision are unnecessary.
How this should shape us
Quit rehearsing tomorrow's shortage as if the Father did not know your name. Do the next ordinary work, share what you can, and put money where you want your heart to follow. Keep earning, planning, and seeking care; do not use ravens and lilies as an argument against a paycheck, a clinic, or a pantry.
