Luke 2:25–2:35
Simeon Sees Israel's Consolation and Wider Light
Consolation for Israel, and a sword Mary will feel
In Jerusalem is Simeon, just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Ghost is upon him. He has been shown that he will not see death before he has seen the Lord's Christ. He comes by the Spirit into the Temple, takes the child in his arms, and blesses God: his eyes have seen God's salvation, prepared before the face of all peoples, a light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel. Gentile light and Israel's glory are held together; one does not cancel the other. Simeon's age is not stated.
Joseph and Mary marvel. Simeon blesses them and says to Mary that this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel, and for a sign spoken against, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. A sword shall pierce through her own soul also. The sword saying may name Mary's grief rather than a weapon or her unbelief. Opposition is already in the blessing; revelation of hearts will cost her.
How this should shape us
Do not preach Jesus as light for the nations by dimming Israel's glory, and do not treat a parent's coming grief as unbelief. Wait for consolation without demanding a timetable, and when a child's calling will wound the people who love him, tell the truth instead of selling only the light.
