Luke 22:31–22:34
Jesus Warns Peter and Prays for His Return
Satan asks for them all; Jesus prays for Simon by name
The Lord says, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. The you of the sifting is plural; the whole band is in the sieve. But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. The thee is singular. Communal testing and a focused prayer over Peter stand together. Restoration is already in view before the fall, and it is aimed at strengthening others, not at protecting Peter's reputation.
Peter says he is ready to go with him both into prison and to death. Jesus answers that the cock shall not crow this day before Peter shall thrice deny that he knows him. Confidence is not the same as faith that holds. Anticipated turning does not make the denials harmless, and it does not guarantee later leadership without repair. Being prayed for is mercy. It is not a pass.
How this should shape us
When you fail after loud promises, return for the sake of others, not to pretend the collapse was small. Pray for people by name in a shaking household, and do not confuse a future role with being done with repentance.
