Mark 12:35-37
David's Psalm Complicates a Simple Son-of-David Category
David's Lord will not fit a smaller title
While he taught in the temple, Jesus asks, How say the scribes that Christ is the son of David? For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool. David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? The common people hear him gladly.
He is not erasing David's line. He is refusing a simple political category that cannot bear Psalm 110. Messiah is David's son and David's Lord. The riddle does not demean Jewish interpretation. It invites hearers inside Israel's psalm to see a greater throne than a restored chair in Jerusalem.
How this should shape us
Let Jesus be more than a useful heir to a national hope. Hear the psalm with the crowd, and do not use this question as a slight against Jewish reading of Scripture.

Best judgment: The riddle does not deny Davidic messiahship so much as show the title is insufficient for Jesus' authority. Psalm attribution and later Christological use require distinction between narrative claim and modern authorship debates.
