And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.

For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:

The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.

But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.

And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children’s crumbs.

And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.

And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

A Syrophoenician mother answers inside the metaphor

Jesus goes to the region of Tyre and does not want anyone to know, but he cannot be hidden. A woman whose little daughter has an unclean spirit hears, comes, and falls at his feet. She is a Gentile, Syrophoenician by birth. She asks him to cast the demon out of her daughter. He answers that the children should be fed first, for it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs. The saying is harsh household-dog language inside an Israel-first mission. Interpreters differ on test, insult, parable, and boundary; none of those readings erases how hard the word is.

She answers, "Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs." Because of this word he tells her to go; the demon has left her daughter. She goes home and finds the child lying on the bed, the demon gone. The woman's agency and successful reply must stay visible. The dog image does not authorize ethnic slurs, racism, misogyny, or humiliating petitioners. His initial refusal does not license leaders to test vulnerable people through cruelty. Her persistence does not require survivors to endure abuse in order to receive help.

How this should shape us

Do not imitate the insult. If you hold power over a request, hear the person who answers well, especially a mother advocating for a child. Refuse racist or sexist readings of "dogs," and do not make anyone earn mercy by absorbing humiliation.
