Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf.

And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread.

And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?

Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?

When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve.

And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven.

And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?

Mark 8:14-21

The Disciples Misread the Leaven Warning through Bread Anxiety

They argue bread while he warns about leaven

They have forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf in the boat. Jesus cautions them: watch out for the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod. They discuss with one another that they have no bread. Leaven here is pervasive influence—unbelief, hypocrisy, or corrupting power are all argued—not a claim that Jewish people or bread itself are corrupt.

Aware of this, he asks why they discuss having no bread. Do they not yet perceive or understand? Are their hearts hardened? Having eyes, do they not see, and having ears, do they not hear? He walks them back through both feedings: twelve baskets from five loaves, seven from seven. "Do you not yet understand?" The questions are sharp and narratively serious. They do not authorize humiliating learners, and remembering abundance does not excuse failing to bring practical food. Confusion is not a moral disability.

How this should shape us

When Jesus warns about a corrupting influence, do not reduce the warning to your grocery list—and still pack lunch. Do not treat Jewish people as leaven, and do not shame a slow learner with these questions.
