Matthew 10:16–10:25
Vulnerable witnesses face courts, families, and hostility
Sheep among wolves
Jesus sends them as sheep among wolves: wise as serpents, innocent as doves. Councils, synagogues, governors, and kings will become stages they did not choose. The Spirit will speak through them. Family can betray family. The disciple is not above the teacher; if the household called the master Beelzebul, the members will not be spared the name.
Persecution in this chapter includes conflict inside Jewish civic and religious spaces because that is the first map of the mission. It is not a charter for hating Jews, and it is not a claim that every conflict is persecution. Endurance is the assignment. Prudence remains; people are not required to stay where violence is imminent.
How this should shape us
Expect resistance without hunting for martyrdom. Be shrewd about danger and clean in your methods. Prepare for awkward family dinners and official rooms. When you are smeared with the same insult they used on Jesus, you are not thereby authorized to smear a people, and leaders may not call ordinary accountability persecution.
