Receiving vulnerable messengers receives their sender
A cup of cold water counts
Whoever welcomes the disciples welcomes Jesus and the one who sent him. A prophet's welcome shares a prophet's reward; a righteous person's welcome shares that reward. Even a cup of cold water to a little one because they are a disciple will not lose its reward.
Mission is not only the road. It is also the household that opens the door. Small hospitality is on the books. The "little ones" are not mascots; they are the easily dismissed workers of the kingdom. Reward language does not turn hospitality into a spiritual transaction, demand unrestricted access to homes, or give messengers immunity from safeguarding.
How this should shape us
Keep water, a spare chair, and a ride ready for people doing costly work. You do not have to be the apostle to share the work. Treat the unnoticed helper as someone whose cup is remembered, and do not let a visitor claim divine right to your house without ordinary care for safety.
