Matthew 18:1–18:5
Kingdom greatness receives the lowly child
Greatness looks like receiving a child
The disciples ask who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Jesus calls a child, sets the child among them, and says they must turn and become like children. Humility of this kind is greatness. Whoever receives one such child in his name receives him.
The child stands for low status and dependence, not for supposed innocence, cuteness, or gullibility. Receiving children means protection, welcome, and real care. It does not mean using a child as a sermon illustration while the child remains unsafe.
How this should shape us
Stop competing for rank in the room. Make the low-status person at home. If children are present, they are not props. Receive them with safeguarding, not with sentiment that leaves them exposed.
