Matthew 20:17–20:19
A third Passion prediction names Jerusalem's agents
Jerusalem, named agents, and a rising
On the road up to Jerusalem Jesus takes the twelve aside. The Son of man will be handed over to chief priests and scribes. They will condemn him and hand him to Gentiles to be mocked, flogged, and crucified. On the third day he will be raised.
The prediction differentiates priestly leaders, scribes, Gentile Roman executors, the twelve, and Jesus. Responsibility cannot be transferred to all Jews, to a people, or to later descendants. Crucifixion is a Roman death. The rising is spoken before any of it happens.
How this should shape us
Keep the agents distinct when you tell the story. Do not let "the Jews" become a villain in a scene that names specific leaders and Gentile execution. Walk toward costly truth without recruiting a people as the enemy.
