Matthew 21:33–21:46
Violent tenants reject servants and the son
The vineyard's tenants kill the son they should have honored
A landowner plants a vineyard, hedges it, digs a press, builds a tower, and leases it to tenants. Servants sent for fruit are beaten, killed, and stoned. He sends his son; they throw him out and kill him to seize the inheritance. Jesus asks what the owner will do. His hearers answer: destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others who will pay the fruit. He cites the rejected stone that becomes the head of the corner. Chief priests and Pharisees perceive he is speaking about them and want to seize him, but they fear the crowds who hold him as a prophet.
The vineyard evokes Israel and its stewardship; the violence is the tenants' crime against the owner's messengers and son. Transfer of stewardship is not ethnic replacement of Israel, and the parable is not a charter for Christian revenge. Named leaders recognize the challenge. The story must not be preached as a warrant to harm Jews or to baptize later church power as the new owner with a sword.
How this should shape us
If you have been given a trust — a congregation, a family, a workplace — the fruit is not yours to seize. Do not treat messengers who ask for fruit as enemies. When you recognize yourself in a hard story, repent rather than manage the crowd.
