Matthew 23:37–23:39
Jesus laments Jerusalem rather than gloating over it
A hen's grief, not a victor's gloat
Jesus laments Jerusalem: the city that kills prophets and stones those sent to it. He wanted to gather her children as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and they were not willing. The house is left desolate. He will not be seen until they say, Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
Desire, contested leadership, prophetic history, coming desolation, and an unresolved future welcome are distinct. This is grief, not gloating. Jerusalem is not a slur, and the lament is not permission to celebrate later ruin. Hope still speaks in psalm words.
How this should shape us
If you love a city, a church, or a people who will not be gathered, stay in grief instead of scoring the refusal. Protect the ones who will come under the wing. Do not preach this lament as proof that you were the hen and they were the problem.
