Matthew 24:29–24:35
Cosmic language announces the Son of man's gathering
After the distress, the gathering no one has to hunt for
Immediately after that distress the sun is darkened, the moon fails, stars fall, and the powers of the heavens are shaken. The sign of the Son of man appears; all the tribes of the earth mourn; they see him coming on the clouds with power and great glory. Angels gather his elect from the four winds. Learn from the fig tree: when the branch is tender and leaves, you know summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know he is near, at the gates. This generation will not pass until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away; his words will not.
Danielic and prophetic cosmic language can carry symbolic and future weight together. 'This generation' has several responsible readings — Jesus' contemporaries, a kind of people, or the generation that sees the signs — and none of them yields a hidden date. The durable thing is his word.
How this should shape us
Hold his words when institutions and skies feel like they are coming apart. Do not turn 'this generation' into a calculator. Watch for the kind of nearness he actually describes, not for a private chart.
