Matthew 8:18–8:22
Following Jesus unsettles security and delay
Following has nowhere cheap to sleep
Crowds press, and Jesus names the cost. Foxes have holes and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head. Another disciple wants to bury his father first; Jesus says follow now and let the dead bury their dead.
The sayings are sharp because delay can dress itself as duty. They are not a sneer at funerals or at caring for parents, and they do not authorize leaders to sever families or exploit homelessness. Possible idioms about delayed family duty do not erase grief. They expose a wish to follow without the homelessness of the call.
How this should shape us
Count the cost before you volunteer a grand loyalty. If you are stalling a clear obedience behind an endless family errand, name the stall. Still bury your dead and still honor parents; just do not use them as a permanent excuse to never go, and do not let a leader demand that you neglect dependents.
