Nehemiah 5:14–5:19
Nehemiah presents his gubernatorial restraint
Twelve years of a governor's table, told by the governor
From the twentieth year of Artaxerxes to the thirty-second, twelve years, Nehemiah and his brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor. Former governors, he says, were chargeable to the people, took bread and wine and forty shekels of silver, and their servants bore rule. He did not so because of the fear of God. He also continued in the wall work and bought no land; his servants were gathered to the work.
A hundred and fifty eat at his table, and he asks to be remembered
There were at his table a hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, besides those who came from among the heathen. Daily preparation is an ox, six choice sheep, fowls, and once in ten days store of wine. Yet for all this he did not require the governor's bread, because the bondage was heavy. Remember me, O my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.
The numbers and contrasts are relevant leadership evidence. They remain interested self-testimony. Affected households are not invited to audit the account in this unit.
How this should shape us
Publish what you declined, what you spent, and who ate at the table. Then let the people who lived under your administration test the story. Visible sacrifice is not a shield against review.

Best judgment: The memoir's figures and comparisons lack an independent administrative audit; their literary role in Nehemiah's self-presentation is significant.
